Like so many of us, I deeply love serving and helping others. But I’ve also felt that heavy mix of resentment, exhaustion, and confusion—pouring out love only to feel drained, unappreciated, or burdened afterward.
That inner conflict used to trouble me: When should I give? When should I step back?
Through prayer, reflection, and experience, I’ve learned there is a beautiful difference between being a true giver and being an enabler.
True giving flows from pure intention and creates unity, fulfillment, and joy for both giver and receiver. When someone truly needs help and receives it with gratitude, love multiplies—blessing everyone involved.
Enabling, on the other hand, happens when we give to someone who isn’t yet ready or willing to receive in a way that empowers them.
The energy feels unequal, disconnected, and heavy. The giver often ends up feeling used or wasted, while the receiver stays stuck—dependent rather than strengthened.
I used to jump in eagerly whenever someone shared a problem or drama, thinking more help was always better. Sometimes people accused me of being “overly inclusive” or “seeing too much potential.” I took that feedback to heart and realized the issue wasn’t them—it was me not discerning with my heart first.
Enabling robs people of their agency. When we do for others what they are capable of doing themselves, we unintentionally reinforce insecurity and helplessness. We extend their struggles by shielding them from natural consequences and growth opportunities that God designed to teach and refine.
Now I pause and listen to my heart before I serve.
If I feel drained, unappreciated, disconnected, tense, unbalanced, or burdened—that’s my gentle signal to clarify boundaries and step back lovingly.
Instead of doing it for them, I offer encouragement, confidence in their ability, and gentle guidance: “I believe in you. You’ve got this.”
When my heart feels energized, appreciated, united, fulfilled, respected, balanced, joyful, and blessed—that’s the sign I’m meant to serve in that moment.
The love flows freely, multiplies, and cycles back in beautiful ways.
This discernment isn’t selfish—it’s wise stewardship.
We serve where God inspires us, trusting Him to handle what isn’t ours to carry.
We don’t interfere in His refining work when we’re not invited.
We honor agency—ours and theirs.
You were created to give from a full, joyful heart—not from depletion or obligation.
God delights in your generosity, and He will guide you to serve in ways that uplift everyone.
Listen to your heart. Trust His quiet promptings. Set loving boundaries with grace.
When you give from alignment, love flows freely, heals deeply, and creates more peace—for you, for them, and for the world.
You are a light.
Serve where your light is welcomed and returned.
The rest? Leave it in His hands.
He’s got you both.
