We often get so caught up in daily distractions and the pursuit of immediate comfort that we miss the quiet invitations God extends to sanctify us—refining us in His perfect timing, when we're truly ready. Our human nature naturally seeks ease: the quick left turn instead of the challenging right. We instinctively move away from pain toward pleasure. Yet how we respond to discomfort determines whether we find fleeting relief or lasting joy.
Temporary comforts—distractions, avoidance, or quick fixes—rarely deliver the deep peace we crave. Instead, they trap us in cycles of prolonged unease. Why? Because we often try to resolve discomfort on our own terms, relying on limited understanding rather than opening our spiritual eyes to see its deeper purpose.
I believe our physical bodies are intelligent and divinely designed—vessels for spiritual growth, training us to become more like God. He is light, love, creation, and life. When aligned with Him—filled with love, creating good, walking in light—we experience health, happiness, and holiness. Misalignment—darkness, fear, anger, hatred—brings sickness, pain, and disconnection from our purpose.
God doesn't hide truth; He makes it accessible. Physical and emotional discomfort is a loving signal: pause, realign, refocus on your divine purpose. Your body acts as a self-correcting guide—unveiled, always operational, directing your spirit toward ultimate success. Our subconscious seeks comfort because it yearns for divine joy, yet we overlook the powerful tool we've been given: our body as a sanctification vessel.
The world promises joy through achievements: success, wealth, power, popularity, perfect appearance. But this endless, shifting list leaves us chasing shadows—shortsighted, distracted from spiritual growth, and ultimately sorrowful.
True joy flows from fulfilling our earthly purpose, which has four interconnected parts that together lead to our full divine potential:
1. Learn to create joy with your body: Honor your heart-compass and read the literal language of your body to reach uplifting, peaceful, powerful states of joy.
2. Master your power of choice: Choose God and faith in every situation; this surrender is the true "test" of life.
3. Refine and sanctify yourself: Become more like God through descent (humility, trials) before ascent and transcendence. Perfection isn't required on earth, but progression toward holiness is.
4. Serve humanity: When filled with divine joy, charity compels you to help others find it too.
Discomfort draws us back to these purposes. A personal inventory often reveals neglect in one or more areas. Growth happens best when we advance a little in all four simultaneously—sanctification is holistic progress.
When we prioritize purpose over comfort, needs and blessings flow naturally: health, abundance, relationships, freedom. Fear and stress fade because worldly things no longer hold first place in our hearts.
This is living "in the world" but not "of the world":
“…because ye are not of the world…” (John 15:19)
It echoes the Savior's teaching:
“For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” (Matthew 16:24–25)
Chasing health through rigid diets, endless self-improvement without divine lessons, or personal gain without service leaves us feeling empty. True wholeness comes from within—aligning heart, body, and spirit to God. We complete our sanctification in community: losing ourselves in service to others (a specific group, in a unique way God reveals) brings unimaginable joy and power.
Change feels hard at first—like growing pains in youth: uncomfortable, unfamiliar, yet essential for maturity. We adapt, recover, and emerge stronger.
“Don’t aim at success. The more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side effect of one’s personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one’s surrender to a person other than oneself… Then you will live to see that in the long-run… success will follow you precisely because you had forgotten to think about it.” (Viktor E. Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning)
When we stop chasing comfort or success directly and surrender to God's greater purpose—following inner promptings to serve beyond ourselves—joy and blessings follow naturally.
Discomfort isn't meant to destroy us; it's an opportunity for sanctification. Instead of panicking or fixing it through limited human ways, choose faith: believe your body and spirit are guiding you toward a lesson. Make the spiritual shift—realign to purpose—and watch true, lasting comfort emerge as a byproduct.
My friend, we can do this. It gets easier with practice. God designed us for joy, refinement, and divine potential. Trust His process. Open your heart to Him, and let sanctification unfold. Greater peace, power, and joy await—not despite the discomfort, but through it.
You're not alone—He's with you every step. Keep choosing sanctification over comfort; the rewards are eternal.
